The inspired apostle Paul, in writing to the Galatian brethren, issues this warning: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap. For he that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that sows to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” (Galatians 6:7,8.)
The universal law of sowing and reaping is both undeniable and immutable. God has promised that “seedtime and harvest” will continue “while the earth remains.” (Genesis 8:22.) The living creatures of the earth were designed of heaven to “be fruitful, and multiply” after their kind. (Genesis 1.) Whether we look to the plant kingdom or the animal kingdom, that which is sown is returned in kind – one reaps what one sows. And that which holds true and constant in the physical realm is no less binding within the moral and spiritual domain.
Imagine the confusion and the frustration for the farmer who would plant wheat and yet produce a bumper crop of corn! In such a case, the very laws of God governing seedtime and harvest would become invalid, and the God behind the laws of nature would be a laughingstock. In short, God would be mocked. And yet because all things physically reproduce after their kind, just as God has promised, God is not mocked – at least He has no reason to be!
Many a man lives like the devil and yet hopes to die a saint. Our world is filled with foolish folk who insist upon sowing wild oats of sin and depravity, and yet hope for a crop failure. Should such be possible, if man does not reap what be sows. God’s laws would be invalid, and He would be in a position to be mocked. But such is not the case. “God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap.”
The question, then, is this: What am I sowing?
