Several years ago, the Atheist Association, in a paper aptly named, The Atheist, made the following charge: “Intelligent people recognize that the Jesus portrayed by the New Testament was an insane paranoiac. He suffered from delusions of persecution and from delusions of grandeur. He was so insane he considered himself either God or equal to God – as he has been taught that God was. He was the most viciously sadistic creature in all history.”
From a rational point of view, one of three possibilities must be accepted: (1) Jesus was an outright, willful liar, (2) He was insane, or (3) He was and is the very Son of God.
There can be no doubt as to His claims. Jesus professed Himself to be the unique, only-begotten, Son of God. (John 3:16; 10:29,30.) Such claims are either true or they are false. If they are true, Jesus was and is divine. If they are false, He either deliberately deceived others or was Himself deceived.
The facts should be helpful in settling the matter: (1) The Father, on two occasions, verbally proclaimed the deity of Jesus. (Matthew 3:17; 17:5.) (2) Jesus was given power to perform signs and miracles; power impossible for either a liar or a lunatic. (John 3:1,2.) (3) Jesus was the perfect fulfillment of over 300 Old Testament prophecies foreshadowing the divine Christ. (Luke 22:44-46.) (4) The God of heaven raised Jesus from the dead, thus forever affirming His Sonship. (Romans 1:4)
Long after the dust has settled over the graves of this world’s most vocal and vociferous unbelievers, the King of Kings will be reigning still!
